Support for students
The Global COE (GCOE) Program places the development of internationally-minded human resources as one of its top priorities. In particular, we expect PhD candidate graduate students to fully display their competence and improve their capability as researchers at home and abroad in one of the top environments in the world provided by the GCOE faculty members and research groups.
The GCOE program provides the maximum support to PhD candidate graduate students in their research and also offers financial support so that they can carry out creative research and transmit their achievements to the world. We have the following support programs.
- The GCOE Research Assistantship (RA program)
PhD candidate graduate students who belong to the departments or laboratories that participate in this GCOE Program are entitled to be employed as research assistants (RA) and receive a monthly salary of about 150,000 yen. Nearly 100% of applicants, excluding special researchers supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and government-supported students from abroad, are employed as RAs. This general support for PhD candidate graduate students is realized through unique programs exclusive to the University of Tokyo and its educational and research institutes.

The GCOE Program places priority on the cultivation of creativity and the innovative capabilities of PhD candidates. Under the GCOE research funding program for young students and researchers, 1 million to 1.5 million yen is offered per year as research funding for creative and promising research plans, based on a strict screening process. This funding targets PhD candidates and young PhD researchers (research fellows, special-appointed associate professors and associate professors).

We encourage our PhD candidates to accumulate research experience and improve their communication ability by presenting their excellent research results at prestigious international conferences and visiting top-level researchers around the world for heated discussions. The GCOE Program established the "Overseas Training" program to support such activities. Applicants who pass the strict screening process can receive assistance with travel and living costs for their participation at international conferences, visits to universities and research institutes abroad.

Doing research in a new environment away from home is effective for discovering new horizons and cultivating self-reliance as an independent researcher. Under our Overseas Internship Program (short-period joint research overseas), PhD candidates can stay at universities and research institutes abroad that are closely related with the GCOE Program for a period up to three months and roundtrip travel expenses and living costs for this purpose will be paid. In respect to longer stays or joint research projects exceeding three months, please discuss the matter with the counselor at your laboratory.

In addition to the aforementioned program, we also have a program to support workshops and joint research with universities and institutes abroad closely related with the GCOE program.
Currently, many graduates of Japanese universities, in addition to the University of Tokyo, as well as graduates of overseas universities, are playing active roles as PhD candidate graduate students in the departments that participate in this GCOE Program. We sincerely hope that ambitious students who are aspiring to make a leap toward the international stage will actively utilize the aforementioned programs and become involved in the GCOE activities.
