Management structure

A new management structure will be created based on the "Future Electronics Research and Education Center" established by the 21st Century COE Program. As the first step, a base management committee will be established. Discussions on the management of this base, as well as the formulation of a budget plan and its execution, will be carried out by the committee. The base management committee, which is composed of the research base development committees and the education base development committees, will promote research and education programs by closely collaborating with one another.

In respect to research, four research COREs (warps), namely (1) Sensing Research CORE, (2) Information Processing and Network Research CORE, (3) Actuation and Control Research CORE and (4) Functional Devices and Materials Research CORE will be established and at the same time, three collaborative groups (woofs), specifically (A) Nano Science and Technology RING, (B) Photonics RING and (C) Integration Technology RING, will be formed in order to strengthen collaboration between the COREs. The "research COREs" will be established with functional expressions in mind, while the "RINGs" are grouped in consideration of common academic foundations. We intend to develop technological and academic systems for cross-border "Secure-life Electronics" by positioning the COREs as warps and RINGs as woofs. The research results will be introduced via the "Secure-life Electronics Web Mart" to encourage joint research and academic-industrial collaboration involving industry, society and research institutes outside the University of Tokyo.

In respect to education, the following human resources development programs will be implemented in close collaboration with the aforementioned research programs.

In addition, we will promote international exchanges among researchers so as to improve the originality and quality of research and education at the COE base as well as to foster internationalism. Competent researchers and educators at established research institutes overseas will be assigned to serve as COE fellows stationed abroad, while designating Overseas Liaison Research Institutes and providing opportunities for periodic exchanges. Thus far we have conducted exchanges with the University of Seoul and Harvard University. We will encourage periodical international symposiums, workshops and seminars led by young faculty members and graduate students and organized jointly with competitive overseas universities and research institutes so as to cultivate a global perspective, improving creativity through discussions and mutual stimulation.

The base leader and the sub-leader will supervise the planning and implementation of the aforementioned programs. A base support office will be created to help the leader smoothly carry out the programs.

The results will be positively disclosed at public symposiums, workshops and seminars. In addition, the results will be reported to an international advisory community composed of knowledgeable external individuals for evaluation and advice.
